TO CEMENT the legacy of Blessed Alberione’s love for the Word of God, the Superiors General of the Pauline Family have called for the celebration of the Month of the Word to be celebrated in the month of September every year. In response, the Provincial Superiors of the Pauline institutes in the Philippines have called their members to join hands in celebrating the first ever “Month of the Word” with the theme “The Bible in the Heart of Every Home.” Various activities were held, which culminated last September 24, the “Sunday of the Word.” This issue of eShalom gathers reports from different communities.


A. Metro Manila: Launching of the Month of the Word

The Pauline Family in Metro Manila launched the first ever “Month of the Word” on September 3, 2017, at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Pasay. The event, integrated within the 4 PM Mass, was attended by parishioners and members of the Pauline Family (SSP, FSP, PDDM, SGBP, IMSA, ISF and APC). The blowing of the ram’s horn or yobel ushered in the celebration. One of the highlights of the event was the enthronement of the Bible done after the Gospel Reading.

The Provincial Superior, Fr. Jose Aripio, was the main celebrant, with Fr. Domie Guzman as homilist. Fr. Domie started his homily by introducing Blessed James Alberione to the parishioners. He pointed to Fr. Alberione’spicture which hangs at the wall near the last pew of the church. He also asked each institute of the Pauline Family to stand to be recognized.  He then shed light on the main theme of the Month of the Word: The Bible in the Heart of Every Home.

After the Mass, the participants joined in a simple agape provided by the different mandated organizations of the parish. (Report of Fr. RamilTapang, SSP)


B. Metro Manila: Celebration of the Sunday of the Word

 The communities of the Pauline Family gathered for the “Sunday of the Word” at the Sanctuary of St. Paul on September 24.

The 4 PM concelebrated Mass was the culmination of the Month of the Word. Fr. Gil Alinsangan was the main celebrant. Fr. Domie Guzman, the homilist,  delved on the love of Blessed James Alberione for the Word of God and the centrality of the Word, along with the Eucharist, in the spirituality of the Paulines. He also recalled that the Church had approved Fr. Alberione’s work SOBICAIN as a primary union for the biblical apostolate.

Accompanying the Paulines were the lay collaborators who study the Bible and do lectiodivina. These were recognized as PROCLAIMERS OF THE WORD and were given each a copy of the Bible and commissioned to share the Word with others. At the end of the ceremony, the assembly gathered at the Alberione Hall for a simple repast. (Report of Fr. Gil Alinsangan, SSP)


C. Southern Luzon: Celebration of the Word in Bailen, Cavite

The communities of the Pauline Family in Southern Luzon celebrated the culmination of the Month of the Word in St. Joseph Parish in General Aguinaldo (Bailen), Cavite, on September 23. The event was done in coordination with Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista of Imus and the parish priest, Fr. Christian Bravo. The program began with a caracol, a dance procession which is popular among the Caviteños. After the Bible ethronement, Sr. Deedee Alarcon, FSP gave a talk on

“The Word of God and the Eucharist,” followed by Sr. Tess Perez on “The Word of God as Source of Communion of Communities.” In the afternoon, the SSP seminarians from Silang staged the “Sa Puno ngSicamoro,” a play on the Gospel story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector. The event ended with the Eucharistic celebration and the distribution of Bibles to 300 families. (Report by Eric Mark Salamat, SSP)


D. Northern Luzon: Month of the Word in Dagupan

The Pauline Family in Northern Luzon (Pampanga, Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, and La Union) gathered for the culmination of the Bible Month at the Jesus Good Shepherd School in Lingayen, Dagupan on September 24. The school is being run by the Pastorelle Sisters. The Pauline Family (SSP, FSP, PDDM, SGBP, IMSA, APC/FDM) were joined by the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) members and other lay faithful within the vicinity of Northern Luzon.

The program started with the Bible enthronement, followed by a talk given by SSP Novice Jhon Fred Caranzo entitled “The Word in our World: Seeing and welcoming God in the Face of the Stranger.” He gave emphasis on embracing missionary life, proclaiming the 

Word not only by using words but making it concrete in our actions. Other activities included animations, games (Family Feud), distribution of the Bible, and group sharing. E. Visayas: Bible Ministry in Siquijor Island

From 22-24 September 2017, the Pauline Family (SSP, FSP, PDDM, SGBP, IMSA, APC/FDM, ISF) from Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu and Leyte trooped to the island of Siquijor for a 3-day Bible animation and distribution with the theme: “The Bible in the Heart of Every Home.”  The Pauline Family visited eight parishes – St. Francis of Assisi in Siquijor, St. Vincent Ferrer in Larena, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Enrique Villanueva, Our Lady of Divine Providence in Maria, Sta. Barbara in Lazi, St. Isidore the Farmer in Lazi, St. Augustine of Hippo in San Juan, and San Roque in Banban. In behalf of Bishop JulitoBuhisan Cortes of Dumaguete and the parish priests of Siquijor, the Episcopal Vicar Msgr. CandelarioCatubig welcomed the delegation.  Parishioners coming from far-flung barrios braved the down-pouring rain to receive their first Bibles, and to get instructions how to read and conduct sharing on the Word of God. F. Mindanao Area: Off to Cotabato

For the Month of the Word, Pauline Family members of Mindanao Area went to Pagangan, Aleosan, Cotabato last September 17, 2017. The members of the Society of St. Paul, Daughters of St. Paul, and the Pious Disciples of the Divine Master traveled for four hours to reach the GKK Chapel of San Isidro Labrador where they told the people of the Month of the Word and shared with them the Word of God. The people received with enthusiam their sharing on why people should read the Bible and how to use it. The event culminated with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and giving of the Bible to those who received their instruction. (Report by Fr. Rene Tañeza, SSP)
